My Proposed NY Jets Helmet/Uniform Re-Design: Open Letter to Jets' Brass

Dear Woody Johnson & Mike Tannenbaum,

In lieu of the new Meadowlands Stadium, which will be unveiled in 2010, changes are in order for the New York Jets. 2010 will mark the 50th year of the New York Jets (originally known as the Titans of New York), and with that a new tradition should be born, with a helmet and uniform re-design.

With that being said, here is my submission for the new helmet design.

I am suggesting that the Jets add a third color to their current color scheme of Hunter Green and White. This third color, will be referred to as “Jet Black.”

These “Jet black” helmets with a single stripe down the middle will signify both a nod to tradition, with a sprinkle of toughness, and will be an instant success with the fanbase! This helmet will also be made in Hunter Green and can also have alternate versions with Hunter Green/Jet Black and vice versa.

The design pays homage to the one-year 1963 logo which is currently being used on merchandise for throwback gear. However, I put a spin on that logo narrowing the “Jet” to look less friendly, and dolphin-like, and taking the word “Jets” out of the logo, emphasizing the outline.

I also created uniform designs to go along with the helmet re-designed helmet.

With the new helmet and uniform designs, the Jets can start the new era in style. As a life-long Jets fan, I am hoping my designs “take” with the organization, and it would be a honor to put a stamp of my own on the team that has already given me so much.

For my readers I encourage any feedback (positive or negative), and if you’re a part of the Jets organization, please contact me! Perhaps we could get an online petition for this going?

Thanks for your time,

Sean Moroney, NY Jets fan

UPDATE: Thanks to Darrelle Revis and Dustin Keller for the kind words, and spreading the word on the redesigns via twitter!

  3. couldnt agree more great design

  4. These designs are pretty awful. I don't mind incorporating the actual jet plane logo but there is no need to add black to an already classic, clean design.

  5. Unis are beautiful good work, hopefully the organization looks at this because its time for a change

  6. Those are ridiculously ugly. No shot of the Jets changing to that attocity of a uniform

  7. hey man i under stand going back to the classic jet but i think it should be a more modern and aggressive design like a fighter jet

  8. Know your history Sean!

The last Jets teams to wear a subtle dash of black in their unis were the awful 1990s versions.

Appreciate the effort, but no thanks.

  9. Why we don't bring back the 80s throw backs is beyond me .,..so sweet please bring them back... I like the Jet Black thing as well but I would rather see the throw back 80s uniform

  10. I like "part" of it. I like the green and black unis, that looks aggressive. But I never have been a fan of the "plane" on the helemts. I say enbroider the plane on the front right shoulder of the unis and use the old J E T S logo on the side of the helmets. Black unis, Black Helmets trimmed in green for home, White unis, Green Helmets, trimmed in green and black for away.

  11. I think the "Jet Black, can be great. I do not want to see a jet plane though. I design can be made to represent what a JET player means and give the sense of speed and power graphically with the name or graphic.

  12. I like it. I actually sent an email to the Jets Management last night, saying they needed to add black to the jersey. New stadium, new look, new start for the Jets. Anyway black is added to the jersey would be nice. Didn't they have a black jersey a few years ago, and Mangini didn't like it so they got rid of it?

  13. Thanks for all the kind words so far!

    Two notes:

    1) There are multiple uniform designs- solely to give more options. I am focused more on the "Jet Black" concept and Helmet redesigns.

    2) If anyone has any contact information for Woody Johnson, Mike Tannenbaum, or anyone else from the Jets front office, please contact me at moroney.sean@gmail.com

    Thanks again!

  14. Sorry I really don't like the helmets. There are things about the uni's that look pretty good. But being that I grew up with the version that is much like the one they wear now, I'm not really wanting them to change much. What they wear now is timeless and classic. Change does not always mean better!

  15. If the Jets were to put a Jet on the Helmet, I would like to see a Modern Jet Fighter on there.

  16. I am all for a redesign to start a new era, but why don't you stick to being a writer, and let a real artist design the new uniforms. Honestly, it looks like a 5 year old child drew these.

  17. The Jets have by far the best uniforms in the league, as long as they avoid the green over green combination. But then again, adding black to a team's uniform has only been done by a hundred or so teams in the last decade, so it is a reasonably fresh idea. Not.

  18. hmm maybe a new black uniform for a alternative would be cool, but changing the helmet colour and logo is a bit much. The players from the Superbowl team saw the changing of the helmet and logo in the 70s as a slap in the face, and I think that we should keep the current look. But a black and white idea would be great, kinda like the lockheed blackbird. Cool idea

  19. I don't mind the helmets but the unis are pretty bad

    ReplyDelete
  20. are the people that like this awful design children? with no idea about history and tradition? this is a terrible idea. the jets uniform is classic. there is no need for any changes. except getting rid of those green pants.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Not a "black color in design" fan at all. I did like the one or two games 10 or so years back when the team wore a throwback uniform but the helmet was all green with the old jets logo trimmed in white. Made it stand out really nice. Hate the black...keep it green. My opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Man, I appreciate your effort. Something new would be cool, encompassing the old.

Why not, instead, design a new Jet for the helmet? The old plane is based on the 707 and looks too friendly. What we need is an F-22 or something similar.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Good effort. But I like our current unis. What's the obsessions with having black in our jersey. Those God awful jersey from the 90's were terrible.

    I like the classic look.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Leave the uniforms alone! This new idea looks horrible.

    ReplyDelete
  25. the helms really aren't good at all and the unis look relatively the same save for the added "jet black," which is completely unnecessary.

    ReplyDelete
  26. the helmets are awful, but the color scheme is fantastic

    ReplyDelete
  27. If Jets fans are asking for a uniform change, then most likely it will happen. I hope its just a slight change with the uniform mainly like it is now.

    ReplyDelete
  28. First off, you should do these in photoshop or illustrator rather than coloring them in by hand with magic marker or crayon or whatever it is you used.

Secondly, the "black on green" and "green on black" lettering and logos would never be readible without some sort of light colored outline... the drak colors would just get lost from any kind of distance.

I think our current uniforms are great. Most teams that attempt to do somethin modern with their uniforms turns out to be a nightmare, see Patriots and Bills. If anything, I would like to see the Jets add an alternate 1980s uniform into the mix as our throwback and get rid of the Titans unis. Most fans were never around to see the Titans play, and the old 80s Jets unis at least have some connection to our current uniforms.

Adding the old "jetplane" logo wouldn't be a bad thing, but not the way you did it.

    Sorry broseph

  29. i don't know if those designs exactly will do it, but i am all for a change in the design of the jets. I really like the idea of adding an actual Jet to the helmet, like they wear on the throwback sweatshirts and all that, and also i have long been clamoring to get some black in our uniforms...this team is not the nice guy team anymore, and we need that black to show our new attitude

  30. The new Jet Logo looks like a passenger jet. They a Jet that signifies speed and power. Maybe a Sr71 Blackbird, or an F14 or F16.

    ReplyDelete
  31. An F14 Tomcat would be nice. Speed, maneuverability, but not a passenger jet. I like the Black with Green trim though.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Dude. Dark on Dark is a horrid idea. Nobody could tell who is who. Maybe a white outer edge to the numbers would make it a little more easy to see. Way too much dark happening. The jerseys you designed ommitted white in general. If you add a white edge to all of the trims, numbers, etc. you could have something. Just my input as a art student at R.I.T.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I AGREE.... I dont that that we should go jet black and be dark like that but for me it is time to get a new logo. I think a fighter jet logo will better instead of just the plane. If you look at teams like NE, TB, SD, Arizona, STL, And even though they moved BAL a change in uniforms also started a change in culture. The JETS need a tough logo with a differnt uniform scheme. I like th cardinals scheme where the pants are shiny or metalliz and they have a ellipse style stripe. But it starts with a better logo. I love the classic jets logo but that belongs to Joe Namath. We need on now that will belong to the current team so that they can build their own reputations and get away from the SAME OLD JETS ATTITUDE! Would be perfect to start when the stadium opens.

  34. Those Designs are just aweful. If the NY Jets were to change the uniform, they should go with a new design. I agree with the adding of the black and maybe even a touch of Gold of trim to represent the Titans era. (I can't stand those Titan Uniforms. See attached link in which I came up with an idea for a more futuristic uniform with Black added:

  35. AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO THINKS THIS COMBINATION OF COLORS LOOKS LIKE THE PHILLY EAGLES???? HELLO!!! The Jets need to bring back the kelly green 80s uniforms. And i know the 90s Jets sucked but that green and black combination looked awesome. I also cant stand the Titan uniforms, they look like a college team. The Titans are from Tennesee. The Jets need to look back to move forward with new uniforms.
